From this guide you will learn the correct way on how to store breast milk.
If you are going back to school or work, you have the ability to pump your breast milk away from your house. Keep your breast milk in a container that is sealed and clean. The expressed or pumped breast milk that is not refrigerated will be good for up to 4 hours if the room does not exceed 100 degrees F. If you can, keep the expressed or pumped breast milk stored in a cooler until you are able to put it in the fridge. You can keep the breast milk in the cooler with ice in it or an ice pack for 24 hours.
You can freeze the breast milk in your refrigerator's freezer and it will stay good for about 2 weeks. If you place the breast milk in a separate freezer compartment, it will keep for 3 to 4 months. If you put the milk in a deep freezer that stays at 0 degrees F, the breast milk will stay good for 6 months. You should not put the breast milk in the door, but instead, put it in the middle of the fridge; you should use your freshly expressed or pumped breast milk in at least 8 days. If you do not intend to use the breast milk in 5 days, you need to freeze it.
Frozen milk should be defrosted by placing it in the refrigerator or by placing under running warm water. You should not defrost the milk by boiling it or putting it in the microwave. Milk that has been defrosted in the fridge must be utilized in 24 hours and milk that is defrosted at room temperature needs to be used in one hour. Do not refreeze milk that has been defrosted. You should also know that breast milk naturally separates, so the milk will be fine if you shake it so it mixes together, and toss any milk that is left over.
